ImageOnsite Events & Activities. APLF offers educational onsite events of commercial benefit to exhibitors and visitors of its upcoming APLF Leather & Materials+ and Fashion Access fairs. These include seminars, conferences, materials and trend displays that are interesting, even inspirational, and which create a complete fair experience. This year's APLF fairs are no exception and here follows a brief description of some of the returning events..

Design Challenges in a Changing World

David Shah, Publisher and CEO at Metropolitan Publishing BV, renowned for its publications: Textile View, View2, Viewpoint, Viewpoint Design, Viewpoint Colour, and PantoneView Colour Planner, unravels the multiple strands governing trends such as “faster than fast” fashion, millennial consumer idiosyncrasies, the fitness craze bringing rise to performance fabrics and the athleisure phenomenon, among other. SATRA Technology UK presents a seminar on: “Supporting Product development from Concept to Customers” that will illustrate the importance of devising a realistic and practical validation process for a new material, product, production process or application, with case histories.

Two Major Annual Conferences

The annual conference programme at APLF has developed into a self-contained module over the years to complement the core activity of the trade fair.

The Global Footwear Retail Conference (GFRC) holds its third edition on 30 March from 10:00 am – 01:00 pm. This year’s conference will have as its main segments the following topics:

  • Political choices reshaping the world: what impact on the footwear retail industry? 

  • Disruptive technologies in footwear retail: Virtual Reality, Live streaming, 3D printing. Will they bring customers back to the stores or keep them home?

  • Footwear consumer’s preferences: key trends from Athleisure to Smart shoes distilled by GFRC’s experts.

The Sustainability in the Leather Supply Chain Conference takes place on the same day from 12:00 noon – 05:30 pm.

This year’s event will concentrate on the lifecycle of products with sustainability and innovation being key themes. Discussions on effective supply chain mapping, recent developments of the multi-brand ZDHC, alternative materials, innovation in chemistry and animal welfare will be featured. The conference is organised by APLF and the British Leather Council (BLC) and sponsored by Stahl (Platinum), Lanxess (Gold), Micro-Pak and PrimeAsia (Bronze) with ILM as Media Sponsor.

Design-A-Bag Online Competition, this year there are 160 design entries from young and up-and-coming designers across 26 countries including Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Colombia, Estonia, France, Greece, Hong Kong (SAR), India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States & Vietnam.

APLF Leather Workshops offer the opportunity to visitors to learn leathercraft, under the expert guidance of seasoned craftsmen. the tools used and how best to use the materials at hand. Last Year’s programme included workshops on Small Leather Goods and Leather Cardholders which proved extremely popular.

Fashion Trends Space for Fall-Winter 2017/18 & Material Trends Space for Spring-Summer 2018 – both of these areas are inspirational to designers and help fashion buyers make purchasing decisions based on the styles and materials presented.

The Material Tends Space, located at Concourse 1D at APLF Leather, features leather and other materials provided by exhibitors. Fashion Trends Space is at Concourse 3C of Fashion Acces.

Fashion Avenue, a section within Fashion Access dedicated to brands, features over 40 up-and-coming brands from different parts of the world including Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and USA at Debuting this year are Sea and Ocean, Skyking Creations, Daniela Moda, Leaves Co., Raw Create, Flink Korea, Extra Leather, Mintsa and Bravohandbags.

Design Street at Fashion Access

New in Fashion Access is the “Design Street”, an area promoting design creativity primarily from Asia, mostly Korea and Hong Kong. It showcases the latest collections of fashion accessories and small leather goods by young, upcoming designers. New this year are Asia Spot, L.T.L.Craftsman of J Motif Co., Alice Martha and General AD. Not to be missed if a buyer is seeking originality.

With the continuing strategic collaboration between UBM and Alibaba B2B, APLF 2017 exhibitors are given an additional digital experience through the Alibaba.com Exhibitor Showcase, an Online-to-Offline-to-Online (or O2O2O) Sourcing Platform. Through the Alibaba.com Exhibitor Showcase, all participating exhibitors are given online product and company showrooms to showcase up to 50 products each, allowing buyers to search and view their listings, contact the exhibitors before the exhibition and place orders online during and after the exhibition. Since the launch of this sourcing platform on 24 January 2017, it has successfully drawn the attention from overseas buyers. According to an informal survey, many participating exhibitors have already received enquiries from overseas buyers and now in the process of following up with leads.
